Rotation Review

This was my fourth rotation of my clinical year and I really loved it! Working in the emergency department I feel like I really gained great clinical skills. I was able to perform many different procedures such as IV placement, lacerations, incision and drainage and splint applications. There were some really interesting cases that I was able to help in. For example, there was a 5 year old who came to the emergency room due to a bead that she placed in her ear. I got to see how the providers failed at the beginning to try and remove the bead through irrigation. They then reconvened and reassessed how they were going to remove the bead. I was able to see how the providers approached clinical thinking. Ultimately, they were not able to remove the bead. I also really loved that each day I was with a new provider. I was able to see so many different styles of care. I feel like I will be able to take from each PA and develop my own clinical style. I really appreciated how the physicians and the PAs collaborated in the emergency room. The physicians treated the PAs with such respect and the PAs were so happy to be able to discuss patients and concerns with the physicians. Another really interesting case was a 101 year old woman who fell and had a major laceration on her right forearm. The provider allowed me to suture and guided me through the process. He taught me tricks and tips on how to ensure the best outcome for the patient. The hardest thing for me on this rotation was seeing my first patient pass away. The death was tragic and it was a very difficult process to watch. A 17 year-old boy had been found on the basketball court unresponsive. The details of the case pointed towards hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. I watched as the providers tried everything they could do to resuscitate the boy. It was hard to watch and I saw the defeat in the providers eyes. Most importantly, I saw how they had to remove the pain and go treat other patients. It was definitely an experience that I will never forget.
